Bernhardt On Broadway is a musical retelling of Sarah Bernhardt’s life. Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) is a role model for all time. Her story empowers young women and fascinates the rest of us.

At a time when women were restricted by a labor market limited to work as a domestic or governess, the great French actress broke the mold and became the most famous woman in the world. Whether she was turning a theatre into a hospital during the Franco-Prussian War and nursing wounded soldiers, forming her own company and touring the globe or starring in the world’s first full-length silent film, she constantly shattered accepted standards.

The movie is set in 1912. A reporter from The New York Times visits Bernhardt in her suite at a NYC grand hotel. His aim is to get the latest scoop from the preeminent tragedienne of the era. Her aim is to tell her story.

Bernhardt surrounds herself with her leading man and lover, Lou Tellegen, who is thirty-seven years her junior; her trusted and eccentric long-time assistant, Pitou; and a host of other characters. An exuberant rolic with a serious message.
