Sarah Endorses Products
Did famous people always endorse products? They did not. Sarah Bernhardt may have been the first person to do this to fill her coffers. A great self-promoter, she was always looking for new ways to engage her audience, grow her brand and feed her desire for new and beautiful things.
What kinds of things did she endorse? All kinds of cigars and cigarettes. Thomas H. Hall Cigarettes, Ogden cigarettes, Duke cigarettes. P. Lorillard tobacco. BS Cigars. You would have thought just one of these companies would have wanted an exclusive endorsement but that clearly was not the case.
Lotions and creams? Sarah Bernhardt endorsed Milkwood cream, Secret of Beauty cream and Vaseline.
She endorsed all kinds of medicinal products. Carter Liver Bitters, Celery compound, Malt extract, Mariani Health Wine, Royal Clarin Voice Pills, Sozodent, Terminus Absinthe and Urondol.
What kinds of candy did she recommend? Jujubees and Lowney’s Chocolate Bonbons.
Marmon cars may not be around today, but Bernhardt touted them way back when.
And let’s not forget about Pears Soap which is still manufactured.
The list goes on. One can only imagine the tidy sum she pocketed for all these endorsements.
